A Day Hike in Noumea
After arriving in Noumea in October
I was invited to go hiking with Myriam, Elaine, and Emma. These French women
from a small network of friends organize a different hike each Wednesday
in a radius of a half-hour drive from the town of Noumea. Today our hike
was in the Koghis Mountains that span the distant skyline behind the port.
I was advised to bring my lunch, wear good hiking boots, and take my camera.
This should be a fun easy day thought I, "how much trouble should it
behiking with 50 year olds?" After a leisurely start on an easy track
it soon turned to large rocks that pierced through the ground over which
we climbed to the summit in a two hours chasing streaming ribbons as markers.
WOW what a delightful view. These ladies extremely fit and sprightly, then
quickly slid to the bottom of the mount on a shorter route. After aching
for two days afterwards I can see why their husbands avoid joining them
and nicknamed the girls the gazelle's.
