Having taught our crew how to splice braid last week
they were still a little puzzled as to the intricacies of rope work.
So today we practiced the eye splice
and I wrote down the instructions which ended up as follows.

e q u i p m e n t
7/16 braided line
sharp knife
3M electrical tape
marker pen
sailmakers needle
fid (4" knitting needle)
coconut tree
and lots of patience
1. Tape
and cut end of rope tie a slipknot 6" from end
2. Place Mark 1 with marker
pen 16" from end Mark 2 at the desired termination point of your eye
3. Pull core out from end
of rope at Mark 2. Tape fid to core (nice tight taping)
4. Insert fid at Mark 1
and travel up the line till you are a 1/4" past Mark 2. keep core
flat (ie: don't twist it) don't snag the cover keep core above Mark 2 running
free exit on opposite side

Starting at slip knot 6" up milk the rope to shape milk
the eye splice so rope and eye are formed no slack in cover tails are aprox14"
long

Remove fid from core and tape it to the cover
7. Hold cover and core at
Mark 1 and pull out standing core 20î
8. Pull out 3î of
core at Mark 2 , milk loop back to form
9. Feed fid up inside exposed
core entering at Mark 2 exit when cover is buried the entire length

Pull out the cover and untape fid
11. Taper the cover line
by removing 2 strands every 1" down the line

milk cover back inside core13. tie slip knot to coconut tree and
whilst placing a little tension on the loop tug till all disappears inside
voila!!
