Having taught our crew how to splice braid last week
they were still a little puzzled as to the intricacies of rope work.

So today we practiced the eye splice
and I wrote down the instructions which ended up as follows.

by Amanda Swan

e q u i p m e n t

7/16 braided line
sharp knife
3M electrical tape
marker pen
sailmakers needle
fid (4" knitting needle)
coconut tree
and lots of patience

1. Tape and cut end of rope tie a slipknot 6" from end

2. Place Mark 1 with marker pen 16" from end Mark 2 at the desired termination point of your eye

3. Pull core out from end of rope at Mark 2. Tape fid to core (nice tight taping)

4. Insert fid at Mark 1 and travel up the line till you are a 1/4" past Mark 2. keep core flat (ie: don't twist it) don't snag the cover keep core above Mark 2 running free exit on opposite side

5. Starting at slip knot 6" up milk the rope to shape milk the eye splice so rope and eye are formed no slack in cover tails are aprox14" long

6. Remove fid from core and tape it to the cover

7. Hold cover and core at Mark 1 and pull out standing core 20î

8. Pull out 3î of core at Mark 2 , milk loop back to form

9. Feed fid up inside exposed core entering at Mark 2 exit when cover is buried the entire length

10. Pull out the cover and untape fid

11. Taper the cover line by removing 2 strands every 1" down the line

12. milk cover back inside core13. tie slip knot to coconut tree and whilst placing a little tension on the loop tug till all disappears inside

voila!!
